Caring about the environment on the Costa del Sol
Sadly nowadays we are accustomed to seeing litter lying around, which will be dealt with by the local council. But sometimes more action is needed. Unfortunately, many people seem to think it’s easier to throw their debris wherever, without giving a second thought to how or where their waste will be disposed of in an environmentally sensitive way.
A great idea is currently being promoted by Spectrum FM radio, with a “Pick up Three, Keep Our Oceans Plastic Free” campaign, urging us all to collaborate. If we all just pick three items of plastic from any of the local beaches we love to visit, wouldn’t that make a great difference?! It all adds up, and if everyone participated, it could make a big change. The most collected items are usually bottles, bottle tops, straws, food wrappers, plastic cutlery and supermarket carrier bags. These items land on our beaches and can take up to 1,000 years to decompose.

Here are some of the places where litter can be disposed of responsibly:
Marbella’s town hall has set up a collection service with a mobile municipal recycling collection point called ‘Punto Limpio’, for residents on the west of the Costa del Sol who would like their special household waste collected without cost. Either take items to be disposed of to the following points on the indicated dates or if you have no transport, items can be collected at home (under certain circumstances).
Call the customer service line on: 717 70 11 38.
Pick up times: Wednesdays from 9:00 to 11:30hr Calle Caravaca, in front of Municipal Market and in Nueva Andalucía from 12:00 to 14:30hr in Avenida Miguel de Cervantes corner of Calle Quevedo. On Fridays in Marbella from 9:00 to 11:30hr at Avenida Las Albarizas, and from 11:45 to 14:00hr at Avenida España next to the Parque de la Constitución park.
