For years, advertisers have voiced frustration over the lack of transparency within Google’s Search Partner Network (SPN). Until now, brands had little to no visibility into where their ads were actually being served, leading many to opt out of SPN altogether. That’s finally changing.
Google has announced that full placement reporting for the SPN is now available across Search, Shopping, and App campaigns. This long-awaited update gives advertisers a clear view of which partner sites, apps, and channels are displaying their ads, complete with impression-level data.
What is the Search Partner Network?
The Search Partner Network is a collection of websites, smaller search engines, and apps that partner with Google to display search ads outside of Google’s own search results. While it can increase campaign reach, advertisers have historically been cautious about using it. The lack of transparency meant brands didn’t know where their ads were being displayed, raising concerns about wasted ad spend and brand safety.
With this update, those concerns are finally being addressed. Advertisers now gain direct insight into which sites are driving impressions and engagement, allowing them to evaluate whether SPN is truly valuable for their campaigns.
What’s New?
Previously, advertisers could only see limited performance metrics across the SPN as a whole. Now, Google is providing site-level transparency, allowing marketers to understand exactly where their ads appear.
The new report functions much like placement reporting in Performance Max campaigns, giving access to:
- A list of all SPN placements your ads have served on.
- Impression data for each placement.
- Deeper insight into how ads are distributed across partner sites and apps.
Why It Matters for Advertisers
This update directly addresses one of the biggest complaints advertisers have had for nearly two decades. The new reporting unlocks three major benefits:
- Full Transparency: Gain clear visibility into every site, app, or channel within the SPN where ads are shown.
- Enhanced Control: Use placement and impression data to make smarter decisions, excluding unsuitable sites and ensuring brand safety.
- Optimised Performance: With better data, advertisers can fine-tune placements to maximise campaign efficiency and ROI.
Industry Response
The update has been welcomed as a significant step toward accountability and trust in digital advertising. Marketers now have the ability to create reports with “Content Suitability” columns, making it easier to review and exclude placements that don’t align with brand values.
At the same time, some caution remains. The feature is currently limited to Search, Shopping, and App campaigns, leaving questions about whether Google will expand similar transparency to other campaign types in the future.
What This Means for Your Campaigns
If you’ve previously disabled SPN due to lack of visibility, now may be the time to reconsider. With placement-level reporting, advertisers can confidently run campaigns on the network, leveraging new insights to protect brand integrity while optimising performance.
This shift from Google represents not only greater accountability but also a stronger opportunity for brands to make informed, data-driven decisions.
